4. Controlling the Zoom
There are four optical quality zoom levels available on the iPhone 14 pro and iPhone 14 pro max.
A .5x can be obtained using an ultra-wide lens, and a 1x can be obtained with a wide lens. The primary lens is also used for 2x, and the telephoto lens is used for 3x.
Using the center 12MP from the larger, 48MP sensor, Apple can achieve a 2x zoom without compromising quality. When this happens, Apple can’t utilize pixel binning, which means they now smaller pixels capture less light when we get ultra-technical.
Even so, using this method will result in better iPhone 14 pro photos than using digital zoom. Instead of adjusting the optics, digital zoom crops the photo, resulting in a lower-resolution image.
By tapping the circular indicators above the shutter button, you can toggle between these preset zoom levels. The other little-known trick is that you can slide your finger up or down when you tap on any of them.
As soon as you perform this gesture, a zoom wheel will appear, allowing you to dial in zoom levels up to 15X. Preset zoom levels are accompanied by their focal length equivalent.
